Elysia Xia is a Chinese-Canadian composer born in Vancouver, currently studying in Boston at Berklee College of Music on a merit scholarship. She is pursuing a double major in Film Scoring and Game & Interactive Media Scoring, with an expected graduation in 2027. Her compositional and orchestral work has been recognized within the department, including placement in one of Berklee’s most selective film scoring courses.
Music has been a constant part of Elysia’s life since childhood. She began violin at age 6 and piano at 9, later teaching herself flute and guitar, which further expanded her musical voice. Her experience performing in orchestras, concert bands, choirs, and jazz ensembles has given her a broad and practical understanding of ensemble writing and shaped her holistic approach to composition.
Her music blends intimate acoustic textures with hybrid orchestral and ambient elements, creating immersive and emotionally resonant worlds. Her stylistic range extends from epic action and dark-fantasy scoring to romantic themes and delicate, melancholic pieces, shaped by her classical background and her love of Japanese film and game music. She is especially drawn to storytelling through music, and to the way it can shape emotion without relying on dialogue. With a background in cinematography, she approaches composition visually, often thinking in terms of pacing, framing, and emotional timing, and writes closely to picture.
Elysia works across both orchestral and hybrid scoring, combining live instrumentation with virtual production. She composes primarily in Cubase and Logic, and uses Dorico for score preparation. She is comfortable managing her own mockups, mixing, and final production, and focuses on making her work feel both technically clear and emotionally grounded.
She has composed for short films, animations, video games, and an award-winning documentary, working closely with directors to support narrative through sound. Outside of class, she actively takes part in scoring challenges and external opportunities, including collaborations with companies such as Riot Games and Ubisoft, where her work has been recognized. Through her studies, she has also gained experience in score preparation and conducting small ensembles.
Elysia is part of the 2025–2026 GRAMMY U Mentorship Program and has composed for short films, animations, video games, and an award-winning documentary, collaborating closely with directors to shape narrative through sound. She has also gained experience in music editing and sound design for trailers and documentaries through her internship at Immortal Cinema International.
During Berklee’s 2026 Screen Scoring Industry Trip, she visited scoring stages including Fox Studios and observed professional sessions, as well as meeting composers such as Harry Gregson-Williams and James Newton Howard. These experiences have helped shape her understanding of the recording process and industry workflow.
Alongside her scoring work, Elysia shares music content on social media, where her nostalgic and distinctive musical voice has reached over 20 million video views and 2 million music streams in under a year, helping her connect with a growing global audience.
A multi-instrumentalist with a strong passion for cinematography, Elysia brings a thoughtful understanding of visual storytelling to every project, giving her a unique perspective that goes beyond music alone.
Elysia Xia is a Chinese-Canadian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and sound designer working across film and games. Her music blends intimate acoustic textures with hybrid orchestral and ambient elements, with a focus on emotional storytelling and subtle detail.
She is currently a double major in Film & Game Scoring at Berklee College of Music, where she has worked on various short films and video game projects. Through these experiences, she has developed a strong interest in how music interacts with story, especially in visual media.
She started as a multi-instrumentalist, and that still shapes how she writes. Her process is very hands-on and instinctive, often starting from sound, texture, or a feeling rather than a fixed structure. That approach gives her music a more personal and expressive quality.
With a background in cinematography, she is especially drawn to how stories can be told without words. She thinks about pacing, framing, and atmosphere when composing, and focuses on how music can support the emotional flow of a scene in a way that feels natural and intentional.
She is inspired by animation and Japanese film and game music, and is interested in creating immersive experiences that connect emotionally with audiences. She tends to gravitate toward quieter moments where music carries more of the story.
Alongside her work for media, she releases personal music under the name Elysia, where she explores a more delicate and introspective side of her artistry. She also shares her work through content creation, including promoting sound libraries while incorporating her own musical voice, and posting original music as a way to connect and express herself more directly.
Across everything she creates, her focus is on making music that feels honest, emotionally grounded, and lasting.
